For me, the start of football season marks the true beginning of fall. Soon the weekends will be filled with hearty cheers for high school, college and professional teams. It’s what we Southern football fans have been waiting for all year.
On game day, solo cups will be raised, flipped, filled and drained in rites of passage and celebration. In the South, belles will perfectly coordinate their game day dresses with the uniforms of their players. Package stores will run out of bourbon. Small towns will double their population and you’ll hear roar of the stadium before you see it.
Of course I’m most excited for college football. I’m keeping my fingers crossed and hopes high for the University of Florida Gators’ new head coach, Will Muschamp, as he works to correct the offensive mistakes of last season. No, we’re not expected to win much during the 2011 season but I’m forecasting a 6-5 record.
Regardless of whether or not the UF Gators have a winning season (though that would be nice) it is, as always, great to be a Florida Gator.
